Music Career
Born in Genoa in 1971, he graduated brilliantly at the age of 17 from the Conservatory “N. Paganini” in his hometown, in the class of M.Trabucco, specializing in historical performance practices with E. Gatti, A. Bylsma, K.Boeke. He has performed in thousands of concerts as a soloist or chamber musician throughout Europe, Japan, Israel, North and South America (Berlin Philharmonic, Musikverein in Vienna, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Concertgebow in Amsterdam, Barbican Center in London, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Lincoln Center in New York, Oji Hall in Tokyo) with a repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to the Avant-Garde, collaborating with ensembles such as Hespérion XX (J. Savall), Les Arts Florissants (W.Christie), Les Musiciens du Louvre (M.Minkowski), Europa Galante, of which he was among the founders together with F.Biondi. In 1994 he founded the Quartetto Aira and the ensemble of the same name in Italy, and for seven years he was first violinist of the ensemble Il Seminario Musicale di Parigi, directed by G.Lesne. From a very young age he has undertaken an intense recording activity that has led him to make hundreds of recordings (Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, EMI, Astrée, Cantus, Stradivarius, Dynamic) some of which have received international critical recognition (Diapason d'Or, G.Cini Foundation Vivaldi Prize, Choc du Monde de la Musique). Many among his recordings are devoted to unpublished composers for violin (M.Mascitti, G.Guido, E.F.Dall'Abaco). His recording of Mozart's sonatas, in duo with pianist Sergio Ciomei, was awarded in Japan as one of the finest Mozart recordings ever made (Ontomo Guide for best chamber music). Invited by various institutions (Fondation Royaumont in Paris, Accademia Musicale Pescarese) as a lecturer for master classes, since 2017 he has been giving masterclasses in historical violin for several Italian conservatories. In 2006, following the restoration of the Guarneri violin that belonged to N.Paganini, he performed a Bachian program on the prestigious instrument, joining the very small circle of violinists who have produced on the famous “Cannon.” Since 2003 he has been a stable member of the ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, and a collaborator with various ensembles including Europa Galante, I Barocchisti, and Café Zimmermann. In 2015 he created the Ensemble Chiaroscuro in Italy, with which he released the solo album Baroque Enchantment, to be released in 2016 by the Concerto Classics label. He has also been active in conducting, participating as assistant conductor in the staging of B.Britten's “Peter Grimes” at the Montpellier Opera.
